hear me out what if we really tried to sell clean energy to these big companies yk. Make them capitalize THAT. It’s not a perfect solution but maybe we can turn around capitalism in that way. Or idk. But I’m thinking if somehow we convince companies that the money is in clean energy, we MIGHT be able to fix things

Billionaires and other wealthy individuals should not have the right to appropriate and use thousands of times more fossil fuels than the rest of us. Another example of inequality being a big cause of our climate crisis.

*waves hands* this! Just This.

” I don’t care if SHEIN is unethical I’m still buying from there the clothes are cute and cheap😍”

in the next breath:

“Ugh capitalism is so bad climate change is getting worse and nobody cares-

it’s YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I’m not saying it’s easy to find brands that are ethical as well as affordable but SHEIN? c’mon now it’s common sense to not buy from them

Yeah the clothes are CHEAP, cheap material and cheap labor gets you your cheap price.

then people try to play the guilt trip like “not every one can afford to not use SHEIN”

so you’re telling me that SHEIN, an online store with SHIPPING COSTS is cheaper than your local thrift store/consignment shop/garage sale literally if you have friends with similar enough fashion taste you can work out a system with them

If you really want cute clothes for affordable prices and you REALLY CARE about climate change and capitalism you would find a way

you literally don’t even have to find it, the path is already there for you Moana

plenty of thrift stores, small businesses, with affordable pricing and QUALITY clothes. Not to mention the YouTube tutorials that could show you how to revamp some of your clothes without a sewing machine.

And consumerism is another thing because buying cute clothes that you never wear contributes to the landfills

TLDR: don’t complain about the economy if climate change if you’re asking for a SHEIN gift card for Christmas😘

Edit: Parents who are working hard so they can buy new clothes for their kids who’ve outgrown their old clothes are limited because you’re filling thrift stores up with things that are going to fall apart in two washes. (thanks vee for this point 🤩)

The World-Ending Threats Are Easier in Fantasy

I talked with a friend about this last night and I thought I could share this with you. We talked about Baldur's Gate and DnD campaigns, as well as fantasy in general and the tendency of a lot of fantasy to deal with world ending threats. And I thought I would share, because it is an interesting topic.

The World-Ending Threats Are Easier In Fantasy

Spoilers for Baldur's Gate 3

In a lot of fantasy stories there are potential world ending threats. Sure, often enough the world is not literally gonna end, but it would cease to be the same world we know it to be. In Baldur's Gate 3 the villains basically plan for world domination. Or at least Sword Coast domination. But it is bad enough I would argue. Which is why in a good playthrough you got to stop them at all costs. So, in the end you defeat them, one by one. And then you go up to the big evil netherbrain and you kill that thing, too, after which the world is gonna be saved once more.

And themes like this are fairly common in fantasy. How many fantasy stories do you know in which the bad guy wants to rule over the world or reshape it entirely. Sure, it is fairly rare that the villain outright wants to destroy it - that is usually only something that "force of nature" villains want to do - but the fate of the world is kinda always on the line and of course the world tends to be saved by our fearless heroes.

For the longest time this went so far into that power fantasy aspect of it, that we never actually did consider how it would feal for those fearless heroes to have the fate of the world on their shoulders. Only fairly recently fantasy has turned more to dealing with the trauma our heroes would face during their quest to save the world, while having to kill and seeing their friends killed. In fact we are so used to heroes being impervious to trauma, that there are still a lot of people who will get very cranky when presented with a fantasy world where trauma does actually affect the heroes. (I just will remind you of how angry the nerds became to see traumatized Luke in The Last Jedi.)

But even so... the fantasy apocalypse is a lot nicer than the real world apocalypse, isn't it?

I mean that seriously. Because especially our younger generations do not know a world before the apocalypse. I am a millenial and I fairly well remember that moment when I was just 16 and realized how fucked the world was. Like, literally, I remember the exact day and time at which I realized that climate change was real and was going to fuck us all over. But at least I do remember a time before that. I do remember having normal winters and mild summers. Gen Z often doesn't.

And here is the thing: The real world apocalypse is not as easy to stop as the fantasy apocalypse. In the fantasy apocalypse it is fairly easy to stop it. Sure, the questline might be convoluted, but in the end it is "destroy magical item in vulcano" or "blow this one bad guy up". Once the main baddy has been defeated usually their troops will just give up - or remember they had better things to do.

But this doesn't really work in the real world. I cannot just go, assassinate Netanjahu and stop the genocide of Palestinians. And I cannot just take some magical item, throw it into mount Etna and stop climate change. And I also cannot throw Elon Musk into a portal and stop capitalism like that.

And sure, I do not have to deal with goblins, dragons, orks at the same time. Great. But... Like... We are all still getting traumatized, right? Like, we all get traumatized and especially between marginalized left-wing folks I do not know a lot of people who did not witness at least one violent encounter with evil goons (police).

And we are all traumatized. Losing a house in a wildfire is traumatizing. Seeing loved ones die of a pandemic the politicians are not taking seriously is traumatizing. Being in constant survival mode because you are too poor for anything else, is traumatizing as well. Most current workplaces are also traumatizing in their own little ways. School is traumatizing for so many of us. We are all getting traumatized by the world being fucked up.

To be perfectly honest with you: I would rather pick up a fight with a dragon, a netherbrain or whatever. Because a dragon or a netherbrain at least gives me something concrete to do. Because a dragon I can slay. Capitalism I can't. No matter how much I protest, I cannot kill capitalism - and I cannot stop climate change. And even if we did a revolution... It might work, yes, but really... slaying a dragon would be so much easier.

This is of course the entire function of fantasy as escapism. Because fantasy allows us a world where the end might be stopped fairly easy. When I DM a DnD campaign and let my players stop the end of the world, it is so we all can have the catharthis of this ending.

I just... wished that the real world would make it a bit easier.

Sorry for rambling. But yeah, it was something we talked about yesterday and I thought I might share.

It's Time For Sensible Leadership In America! We Can't Continue To Allow Climate Deniers. The Evidence

It's time for sensible leadership in America! We can't continue to allow climate deniers. The evidence is right in front of them. More and more of America will soon be under water, along with other environmental disasters, and we will be heading toward a homeless problem that you can't even imagine.

Hurricane Helene and the destruction is unbelievable. What a tragedy for everyone in her miles and miles of destruction! The loss of life, loss of animals, homes and cars destroyed and washed away. Places filled with memories and history, and a general sense of security gone for everyone affected with the loss of their home, and the devastation for the loss of any of their loved ones.

Vote Kamala Harris for president.

I hate how the average progressive liberal stance on climate change is simply that you must *believe* that climate change is real, that you should listen to *science*. But if you actually act in proportion to what the science of saying then you're q crazy climate nutter. You're just supposed to believe that it's real but act as if we can just keep going like we are now forever

Everyday I read about how many bombs are detonated, how strong the hurricanes are, how green Antartica is turning, and how the 6th extintion event happened because of capital greed, and I just can't wrap my head around the world as I know it ending, with me in it.

I'm not the kind of human to survive harsh winters, strong weather anomalies or hunger. Even if humans can survive another 100 years in a different kind of society, I'm not strong enough. I'll die, and my family will die, and all my friends will die.

And I'm just supposed to go to work because it's Monday.

something about how in the wild robot, the golden gate bridge is deep underwater. and yet whales are swimming in the bay above it. something about the idea that climate change has come and yet the world is still alive and thriving, that there was still time to make it better, to fix what we could, to make things right. the bridge is underwater but the whales are alive and back. our cities went underwater but instead of pretending as though nothing had happened we learned to change and care for the planet we had left, realized it was not too late. that there was hope. learned to farm better, preserve what we could. leave the natural world safe. that we didn’t have to be merely aggressors but learned to coexist on our planet. that it will still be okay. something about that man idk.

Golf Courses ARE Being Converted

The Solarpunk "fantasy" that so many of us tout as a dream vision, converting golf courses into ecological wonderlands, is being implemented across the USA according to this NYT article!

The article covers courses in Michigan, Pennsylvania, California, Colorado, and New York that are being bought and turned into habitat and hiking trails.

Golf Courses ARE Being Converted

The article goes more into detail about how sand traps are being turned into sand boxes for kids, endangered local species are being planted, rocks for owl habitat are being installed, and that as these courses become wilder, they are creating more areas for biodiversity to thrive.

Most of the courses in transition are being bought by Local Land Trusts. Apparently the supply of golf courses in the USA is way over the demand, and many have been shut down since the early 2000s. While many are bought up and paved over, land Trusts have been able to buy several and turn them into what the communities want: public areas for people and wildlife. It does make a point to say that not every hold course location lends itself well to habitat for animals (but that doesn't mean it wouldn't make great housing!)

Golf Courses ARE Being Converted

So lets be excited by the fact that people we don't even know about are working on the solutions we love to see! Turning a private space that needs thousands of gallons of water and fertilizer into an ecologically oriented public space is the future I want to see! I can say when I used to work in water conservation, we were getting a lot of clients that were golf courses that were interested in cutting their resource input, and they ended up planting a lot of natives! So even the golf courses that still operate could be making an effort.

So what I'd encourage you to do is see if there's any land or community trusts in your area, and see if you can get involved! Maybe even look into how to start one in your community! Through land trusts it's not always golf course conversions, but community gardens, solar fields, disaster adaptation, or low cost housing! (Here's a link to the first locator I found, but that doesn't mean if something isn't on here it doesn't exist in your area, do some digging!)

posting here because this just doesn’t feel right to talk about in the horseimagebarn voice but this is extremely important to talk about.

an LED road sign that says "DO NOT TRAVEL IN WESTERN NC"

my partner and i have returned to our hometown to stay with her family and my own has gotten a hotel here too (they moved to the town we currently live in after we did) so we are all safe and out of the thick of it

however there are tens of thousands of people who are not both in my own town and in the many surrounding it. appalachia will take an extremely long time to recover from this and there are more storms on the way. all i see on social media right now is people asking for shelter because their homes have been destroyed, or people asking for help searching for family members who are missing. hundreds of trees have fallen. hundreds of homes have flooded. roads are literally falling apart. preexisting sinkholes due to shitty pipes are opening up and consuming land. dams are on the verge of bursting and the only way to stop it is to release water so quickly it floods whole towns. all but one of our cell towers are down, so only people with at&t have service and the rest can’t contact anyone. over half the town still doesn’t have power. a major water supply issue occurred and the entire town is on a water boil order with no electricity to boil with. people are trapped in their homes and workplaces or out on the street because they have nowhere to go. law enforcement is blocking off roads but trapping people in the process. people have to be rescued by helicopter. our animal shelter has no water or power and boarding facilities have been flooded. entire villages like chimney rock nc are gone, and entire cities like asheville are cut off from the rest of the state and are completely inaccessible. ALL OF THE ROADS IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA ARE CLOSED. 400+ roads are closed because they are unsafe . that is INSANE!!!

a facebook post of two images side by side of the same view of chimney rock, nc. the first image is a normal road with pretty trees and grass on the right and a small shopping center and parking lot on the left. the second image shows the road break off into pure mud and rubble where the subjects of the last image once were. the caption above reads "chimney rock before and after. damn."

when people say that climate change isn’t real, they don’t know what they’re talking about. climate change and its father capitalism are only going to continue to worsen lives in every way possible. i live in the mountains and our infrastructure is completely unprepared to handle hurricanes and it’s only going to get worse. it’s such a strange and eye-opening experience to live something like this when you think that it could never happen to you because that type of weather shouldn’t reach you in your environment. climate change doesn’t care where you live. it’s real.

an areal image of a road going through forested hills. half of the road is completely decimated, having collapsed.
an image of a white house that has been flooded by yellow-brown water. the water has reached halfway up its windows, meaning it's about halfway up the house as a whole. a large tree is in front of the house and is equally submerged.

western north carolina and the rest of the southeast that has been hit by helene need help. more people need to be talking about this so that the government DOES SOMETHING because the government historically fucking hates appalachia and it still does!!! the major state institution near me took DAYS to respond despite being the only place in town with power and wifi connection because they had to wait for the state to approve their response—they could have allowed thousands of people to evacuate days prior to the hurricane hitting us but they didn’t do anything before or after until it was too late!!! it’s bullshit!!! PLEASE get talking about this because something has to be done. climate change is going to continue happening and our mountains and the people in them are going to suffer immensely. hundreds if not thousands are now homeless. please talk about this look at the footage online of the wreckage and look how quickly our infrastructure crumbled. we need better. the people of appalachia deserve better.

a hospital absolutely consumed by water. only the roof is visible above the dirty brown water. a couple of trees poke out of the water around it
an image of the river arts district of asheville. it is covered in water; no ground is visible. a single smokestack rises out of the water. the very tops of roofs are all that is visible besides that and trees.
a screencap of a newscast showing a walmart supercenter that is completely flooded. items are being washed out of the doors by murky brown water that has taken over the entire parking lot. an overlay reads "IMPACT OF HELENE - LIFE-THREATENING FLOODING - BOONE, WATAUGA COUNTY"

i’ll get back to posting horses soon. but for now this is a lot. my friends are homeless and my family had to get off the mountain or be trapped there without power and water for days. we’re all safe but exhausted. i hope everyone who has been affected by this is staying safe. if you are in western nc, dm me. when i come back, if you’re in my area, im happy to bring supplies. stay safe everyone
