Kung Fu Panda 2 - Tumblr Posts
Edit: Plus, Lord Shen from Dreamwork's "Kung Fu Panda 2"
One day , I decided to recall what characters I had a crush on in childhood. I'm a little surprised that some of my crushes were birds (well, at least 5 of them).
So, yeah....I find it a bit funny (and weird).
okay, these last few days I've been very obsessed with these two (the entire franchise) so since I don't know how to draw or write a good story I decided to make a playlist for them because at least I collaborate with something that I love đ«¶
Obviously a playlist for Po because I love him đŒđ€đ€
I would be having a good day but then I think about Kung fu Panda 2 and I start crying.
Finally a alignment chart where I can perfectly fit Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2 in cruel evil villain villain. He not only kicked a puppy (puppy, wolf same thing), said puppy was also his suboridnate and he killed him.
And he commited genoice of course.
So the other day, I was thinking about the classic alignment chart, and how it doesnât really do much for me personally since itâs more about how characters interact with systems rather than how they interact with other people
I had a minute, so I figured Iâd throw something together that DID suit my needs!
(Note: This chart regards a characterâs intent rather than the outcome of their actionsâand for sake of clarity, here are the definitions Iâm working with:
Good: concerned with the well-being the collective, often at expense of the self
Evil: concerned with the well-being of the self, often at the expense of the collective
Kind: concerned with the emotional responses of others
Cruel: unconcerned with the emotional responses of others)
I like conceptualizing things this way, cause sometimes Bad People behave with âgoodâ or âkindâ intentions, and sometimes Good People do things that seem âevilâ or âcruelâ
Also this gives me a way to compare/contrast characters who get lumped together under the other system

Tigress-Subtle Characterization and Growth
At first glance tigress is the stereotypical hardcore, feels nothing, and shuts everyone out character, but upon a further look there is so much revealed through the lengths the writers went through to develop her naturally and subtly.
Tigress does start out cold and no nonsense. She initially is angry at Po for being chosen as the dragon warrior. This is revealed to be due to her relentless pursuit to hone her kung fu skills and impress Shifu. She wasnât truly mad at Po or want to be the dragon warrior what she wants is to be acknowledged by Shifu. Because Shifu believes that he led Tai Lung down the dark path he took Shifu is emotionally distant from tigress. This leads to her reckless behavior; Punching ironwood trees for twenty years until she felt no physical pain, training non-stop, leaving to face Tai Lung alone. These were all in an attempt to win his affection. She used to live in an orphanage where everyone feared her and said she was a monster. She was in an environment devoid of affection and the first person to ever show her any was Shifu. He trained her and helped her control her strength so that she was no longer feared by the children or caretakers at the orphanage. Shifu ended up adopting her. From a young age all she sought was approval and love and she rarely was shown either. It is through Po that that starts to change.
When the second movie rolls around Po and Tigress are close. This is the direct result of the first movie. Their relationship kickstarts because Po got through Shifuâs tough exterior. Po causes Shifu to change after the events of the first movie. Shifu realized that his tough love mindset may not be the best course of action and that his emotional distance actually hurt those he cared about most. He realized worth wasnât just from how much kung fu you knew, but what you did with your strengths. This directly effected his relationship with Tigress. He believed it was his show of love and affection that led Tai Lung to grow arrogant and believe that he deserved the dragon scroll and power, but it was his lack of show of pride in what tai Lung had already accomplished. Their relationship became more open and more like that of a father and daughter than teacher and student. In the credits of the first movie there are scenes of Tigress and Shifu joking around. This large step in Tigress and Shifuâs relationship causes a shift in Po and Tigressâs relationship as well. Tigress now has no ill will towards Po because she now has Shifuâs approval, so now their relationship can progress.
A lot of Tigress and Poâs relationship growth is due to their shared circumstances. Tigress understands Poâs struggle with identity in the face of his newly discovered past. She was the kid with no family and no identity and much of her inner struggle has been centered around that. It is through this connection that Tigress was the ideal member of the furious five to support and sympathize with him throughout the second movie. Po believes that he needs to hide this beneath the surface and that it shouldnât bother him. Ironically itâs Tigress, the one who hides her pain behind a self made wall, that reaches out to him and tells him itâs okay to feel pain and starts to lower her walls as well as his.
Tigress is a character of action and that is seen clearly through the animation. Most of this development is seen not outright said. If you were to remove the sound from any of her scenes be it when she told Po the story of Tai Lung and part of her past is seen, when she talks with Po on the boat, or the fight and subsequent hug in gongmen jail, you can still understand the emotions this character is conveying and not truly lose anything from the character. This is a strong point in characterization especially in an animated movie. The great sound and voice acting help though.
All of this development was brought about by the thought the writers put into the character and her backstory as well as fantastic animation. Even the end credit pictures help move the character forward to where she ends up. I think this is a testament to the care the creators have for these characters. Where they are able to make characters who feel real and relatable through subtleties such as an expression or inflection of the voice. This helps Kung Fu Panda be one of my all time favorite animated trilogies.
Kung Fu Panda 2 - A Master at Blending Different Forms of Animation
Kung Fu Panda 2 is my favorite animated film. I think it managed to take all of the already fantastic technical aspects of the first film and improve upon them without losing the heart of the original. One of the things that sticks out the most in the second film is the fact that it uses 3 distinctly different art styles for their animation chinese shadow puppetry, classic 2D animation, and 3D animation. Each of these forms of animation play a role in setting apart their portion of the story and representing something about the characters and the world that they portray.
The 3D animation is the main form of animation used to portray the world that the main story takes place in with the shadow puppetry and 2D animation showing personal details and backstory about the villain, Shen, and the hero, Po, respectively. The shadow puppetry is used to establish the setting right away and also expand on some of the culture of China that wasnât seen in the first film. The story begins on a wide shot of the city with bright lighting and ends on the doors of the palace closing behind Shen with much darker lighting of the frame. The first shot inspires a sense of openness and possibility whereas the closing shot makes one think of the sealing of one's fate and confinement or journey to a darker future. It could also be the closing of the possibility of a better future for Shen because the doors block out light and make the frame darker. The way lighting works in shadow puppetry played a large role in establishing tone. Shen is mostly framed with red lighting near him. When he is first introduced the red tinting is not very prominent, but overtakes the screen when he makes the decision to get rid of the pandas. Red is also the color of the fireworks he uses whereas the fireworks used by his parents and the people donât contain red. The red lighting is seen again when Shen is walking towards the setting sun before the doors to his parentâs palace close behind him. The red is much more muted with black and white within the frame, outside of his appearance, foreshadowing that his tragic fate and demise are ultimately cause through his own choices and actions. He wouldnât give up his quest until the very end. His parents are also not shown in frame with him until they banish him showing the divide and disconnect between them (This doesnât have much to do with the use of animation style but I really liked the directorial choice). The movement of the characterâs is not as fluid as that of the 2D and 3D animation which can make it feel like going through the motions and all a part of destiny/the plan which plays a large role in Shenâs story. He thought he was going against fate and changing it when he killed the Pandaâs, but in reality he was only sealing his fate.
This use of shadow puppetry is meant to juxtapose the 2D animation used in Poâs flashbacks. The 2D animation during Poâs backstory has much more fluid moments and that is used to great effect when the whole story is shown. Everything happens so fast and the attack seems to come out of nowhere because the shift from peaceful to destruction was jarring. To the pandaâs this was something that they never could have seen coming. So using the fluid and quick transition that the 2D animation provides shows the way the Pandas must have felt about the whole predicament. There is also the shift of animation from 2D to 3D at the end of Poâs story, when his mom puts him into the box of radishes and leads the wolves away, that provides the real meaning behind the 2D animation of Poâs backstory. The 2D animation was meant to symbolize Poâs feelings towards these specific memories, he feels like theyâre dreams. Thatâs why up until this point Poâs dreams were still animated in 2D, like in the first film, while other flashbacks like the ones told to him by Mr. Ping were still in 3D animation. Until that point Po could brush these tragic memories off as dreams, but in that moment they became real to him.
I am no master of animation, so I may have missed some points and symbolism about the art shifts within the film and how they pertain to the specific characters. I am just someone who finds the filmmaking medium to be fascinating and loves writing about certain aspects of films that I enjoy. I hope that people appreciate this and that more people will have active conversations about film as a whole.
