I was like "OHHH ITS THEM!"
Caranthir!
Caranthir dislikes people. And animals. And plants that need to be watered more than once a month. And everything that isnāt embroidery or economics. And his temper is short enough that everybody knows it. He also has a habit of making ridiculously elaborate schemes to avoid people- his most famous involved a sack of flour, a bungee cord, and a bag of frozen peas. No-one was at all surprised when what he did in Beleriand came out.
(basically Caranthir is what would happen if Edmund Blackadder and the Queen of Hearts somehow had a child.)
So hear me out - but if the feanorians were in our time, they would absolutely have some form of mental health difficulties/things they struggle with, (putting aside whether or not they had smthing like adhd for the second) and this would be very easily shown through their actions, and you could see it in the way they responded to things.
For example, Over-Achieving Perfectionist Feanor- never fully satisfied, constantly needing to be better, best, in everything he did and having tunnel vision when it came to doing that (not in the sense that he can't focus on anything else, simply just that which would effect him reaching his goal).
Compartmentalizing Maedhros- as the eldest child, and one who spent a lot of time doing things for others/having to look out for other people throughout his life, I think that (especially after Angband, but even before) he would find it really difficult to focus on things negatively effecting him unless it would effect his brothers, and would rather just throw it in his mental box for later.
I think that Maglor probably had attatchment issues, I think that with Elrond and Elros a lot is said about potentially he and Mae trying to heal the gaping hole left by their brothers' death, but I also think that for him, as the second eldest, he spent a lot of time helping and looking after his younger brothers, (though not in the same way Mae did) but also spent almost his entire life (depending on what you think of the timeline) with Mae to lean on and depend on, to be the older brother, and with them all dying and the pain of the silmarils that he struggles not to get attached to others.
Celegorm I like to think not necessarily struggles with social interaction, but as he prefers to and does spend the majority of the time outside, with animals and with only his close family for company (i do think he had someone he hunted with but can't remember) and so when he did have to be in large groups with other people would find it awkward as he isn't in the woods anymore, and so he has to behave differently.
Caranthir I think, as the middle child, probably struggles with being surrounded by his wonderful sibilings, (not that he isn't also amazing, I love them all) with wonderfully diplomatic Mae, charismatic and creative Mags, Celegorm with his skill in nature and with animals, Curi of course has his smithing (and I'll speak on that in a sec, but it's time for Cara) and the twins are known as the funny tricksters, and he struggled to find a place for himself. He's normally described as either angry (but that also applies to Curi, Celegorm, and Feanor) and/or as very smart and scholarly (which can also apply to Feanor and Mae, at least in my understanding of these characters ofc) and so finding that space, similarly to Faenor's fears of being replaced by his dad (which I do think caused his perfectionism) was a very large part of his personality.
I think Curufin's issues are spoken about quite easily, but just to add my thoughts, I think that his fear of being like his dad his whole personality probably caused a lot of resentment, and feeling not good enough. I think he probably would have a lot of internalised anger at everyone, and although I do think he did genuinely believe in the Oath (probably the only one who actually did, at least for the majority of it) I think right before he died (and I did see another post though I can't remember who by, if I do I'll tag them but it was brilliant and based off this) and saw his brother's death, that was when he realised that his dad was wrong. I think that was mentally damaging and probably when in Mandos caused him to have slightly difficult trust issues, particularly with Feanor, as he saw it as a personal affront, after all, if he's just like Feanor, and Feanor messed everything up this badly, then what does that make him?
Ambarussa- honestly I think that their main concern would be an identity crisis, with being referred to as Ambarussa, or as the twins they'd feel that they had to be funny or memorable to get people to like them/see them as people, including their own family, and that would cause issues with their relationships later down the line as they would assume that nobody actually liked them, and that they had to work to be liked.
I'm sorry - possibly my fav artist I've found here - I absolutely love how you draw Mae!!!
finally got around to doing proper feanorian full-body refs (in beleriand)ā¦ with updated designs!! im still trying to figure out whats my style kkeushefks but im rather pleased with how these turned out for now š heres some more experimental sketches i did to celebrate the end of a rather taxing week hooho
Inktober Day 1: Crystal
because it's impossible not to think 'Annatar' without also then thinking 'rich widow decked out in jewels he bought with someone else's trust fund'
Inktober Day 2: Suit
look i know i couldve done a suit of armor or smthn but if there's a chance for me to draw the Boys (TM) in suits then you bet im taking it hehehe
Inktober Day 3: Vessel
cursed thought HEAR ME OUT OK how wack would it be if every time Sauron shapeshifted (e.g Annatar back to original body), instead of it being an instantaneous thing, his new form has to crawl out of the old hollow one like a caterpillar or a snake? ...what? that's kinda gross? im sorry i wont do it again but i was running low on ideas oKk
Inktober Day 6: Spirit
Inktober Day 6: Spirit
sometimes i like the idea of the sons of Feanor (sans Amrod) who died via the kinslayings/silmaril lingering by Maglor for the rest of his time in self-imposed exile... bonus points if houseless spirits look like they did when they died too!!
so i tried my hand at inktober for the first time... then gave up after a few days bc im too lazy... idk how those people who do it for the whole month do it, but please sire impart thy determination onto me!!! šāāļøš i might do a second dump in later October if i pick up any other days but for now.... my procrastination calls āØ
Caranthir Headcannons
Here is a mix of some of my favourite hc Iāve seen both from others and some if my own (please feel free to add credit where due - I am really sorry but canāt find the original posts to credit hcs that arenāt mine) for Caranthir; Iāve seen this done a few different ways, and I hope this works!
Favourite HC I Found:
Caranthir is very sensitive to (everything) light - especially the super special light the elves originally get, and began his descent into textile-madness after exploring ways to help block out the light
I love this - and personally, though of course elves are different, kind of jump off that to also take him as being either on the spectrum, or spectrum-adjacent, and having his interest in fabric be a way for him to help himself with the sensory issues that can be sooo annoying.
Romantic HC:
He does get married, likely in a more human sense than elves (or a mix of both). I personally think he would have kids, (I know some ship him with Haleth - I donāt particularly mind either way) and the kids and wife would have stayed in his lands, and although it does break my heart, most/all were slain when his lands were destroyed
Craft HC:
Kind of already mentioned, but he would be the textile child (as a textile lover as well, I am likely slightly biased) and would be really good at mixing different fabrics and styles from different species etc
Family HC:
Middle child. Need I say more?
I think heād feel too much responsibility for the twins and Curi (though of course Feanor would be very involved with Curi, and Mae would be very hands-on with the twins too). I think he would work a lot with Curi though, to help match pieces of jewellery with clothes (esp when making gifts for family)
Extra HC:
I canāt remember who I saw this from - but he wears a LOT of rings. One for each family member, one for himself/his success, his wedding band (though I would like to take the original hc and have his wedding band be his fatherās band). I think he probably would never tell his brothers what the rings are for (unless very drunk) and would either have the rings made for him based off of his brothers, get then somehow from his brothers, or some mix. And he has one made for him by Celebrimbor - one of the first things he makes for someone else!
Dear Feanorians. For how long a person may have a Silmaril before you have to murder them? Asking for a friend. Thank you.
It depends. Are you a potential ally? My brothers and I are all very just in following the oath of our father, and will be swift in our pursuit of justice. However, ot would depend on where you are. If you would like to share your place of residence, we can stop by to five you more exact advice. After all, we are all very eager to fulfil our Fatherās final wishes whenever possible. Kind regards,
Maedhros
Why thank you very much for this question, and I hope I may answer it to the best of my abilities. I would say that it depends mainly on one thing: are you going to make the right decision and bring the Silmaril to its rightful owners, (us) so we may be reunited with our fatherās work, or are you planning on keeping it? May your road be lit by the glory of the Silmarils,
Maglor
How fast can an elf run? Likely, not fast enough to escape my brothers, me, and our many followers. Safe hunt,
Celegorm
Well looking at past events, I would expect that one would have however long it took for my brothers to hear you had it, or at least that whoever previously had it now didnāt, with potentially time for Maedhros to send a customary letter requesting voluntary handing over of the Silmaril, along with the necessary time to move the army of followers to your location.
Caranthir
As soon as I can find your location - if you think I will allow you to stand there with the pride of my Father you are sorely mistaken! I will hunt you until the light of the Silmarils run out, as Iāll follow my Fatherās oath! I wish you great luck. You will need it,
Curufin
It depends, does Maedhros or Curufin know you have it? You would be surprised how quickly they will find these āshiny rocksā if they can beat Morgoth to it - however I think you will find there are easier ways to get ahold of the rocks, ways which even the most experienced elf would still struggle to defend against. May your path be lit,
Amrod
Maedhros or Curufin will realize you have it faster than you can blink. You would be surprised how fiercely they will fight for the return of even one Silmaril if it means they can fulfil our Fatherās oath. May your path be lit,
Amras
(Amras would be dead though lets be real)
Just to be clear - this is from the very start, so from before the Silmarils are made until their death (or self-banishment).
Sorry this is in awkward place!
Mae&Mags: We went through an entire character arc during the First Age
Mae&Mags: We became more evil if youāre curious
Eonwƫ: Dont worry, we're still doing the War of Wrath, there is time for a redemption arc!
Mae&Mags: (staring at the elves guarding the Silmaril) We're going to get worse on purpose
If Caranthir and Imlerith got into an argument, what would it be about?
I imagine them as fundamentally different, Caranthir being on the autistic spectrum, Imlerith the practical soldier, each with a fixed set of rules how things should be done, handled, sorted. So probably field hygiene or domestic order, in a situation in which they are too cooped up to avoid each other properly haha
So I support Haleth/Caranthir
But lesbian Haleth is also awesome.
But funnier still:
May I propose lesbian Haleth, whose elvish is not great, and is used to men with beards as soon as they can grow them, and whose culture definitely has a āwomen sew and do accountingā bias, tripping head over heals into lust with the biggest, buffest elf lady she has ever seen, who clearly likes her back, and wants to protect her people, and did she mention BUFF?
And then while encouraging the advances of this beautiful beautiful lady, her elvish improved and she slowly realizes with horror: lord is not a gender-neutral term, and Lord Caranthir in her beautiful silks IS A BOY ELF.
And then she is so embarrassed she makes up some stuff about wishing to remain independent as a people and runs away and forms her Amazon warrior bodyguard unit. š
Or it turns out Caranthir has been closeted mtf her whole life and Haleth helps her find herself as a beautiful eleth and they have a very happy life together until that mortality thing gets in the way
Tonight is a great night to think fondly on Haleth and Caranthir. I think they would make such a funny couple.
Imagine??? The Big Tall Broody Scowling Kinslayer Who Is Also The One Reason The Economy Is Functioning At All Between The Different Races/Elvish Factions Who Probably Is Dying To Tell King Thingol/His Cousins To Fuck Off At Any Given Moment and hes looming over this short human lady??
This short human lady that Can, Will, and Already Has told him to pull the stick out of his ass and bullies him into doing normal townsfolk chores??? Lord Carathir, Master Economist and a Weaver with the skill to rival his grandmother, sitting there and darning socks cause his tiny mortal wife told him too. His reward will be a kiss on the cheek but she'll scold him while he does it because he said a mean thing about his Cousin Finrod in his last letter to her while he KNEW Finrod was visiting her.
Only three things in the world keep Caranthir in check: His Eldest Brother, The Lord Himring, The Current Head of the Feanorian Faction of Noldor, and Former High King; the idea that if he didn't complete his brothers' tax paperwork and run the Trade Routes then the Nolofinweans and Arafinweans would become more economincally important And We Cant Have That; and his 4'11 wife he met bloodied and wrathful on a battlefield screaming at an orc over the corpse of her brother-- it was love at first sight
My awkward STEM elves. ā¤ļø No doubt arguing if a number should be rounded to the tenths or hundredths after a decimal. Or if they should just kiss. š
This wonderful comm (featuring redhead Caranthir, change my mind) is brought to you by @nevui-penim-miruvorrr. Seriously, their art is amazing.
Maglor may have been the sibling who was with Maedhros the longest, but Caranthir was his favorite. He'd never admit it, but it was true.
Maedhros was the only person Caranthir felt comfortable being emotionally vulnerable with for a very long time, before Haleth came along, and when she died, it went back to just being Mae.
Caranthir was the only person who Maedhros felt genuinely comfortable touching. After Sauron and Morgoth's acts against him, he couldn't stomach having his hand held by even his closest friends, and while this eased up somewhat after a few years, Caranthir was the only person he hugged or carried until him and Maglor kidnapped the twins.
(Also because autism bros)
