Zoro X Reader: Hands
Right guy, here's an attempt. I'm no super happy with it but it's better than my first and considerably shorter attempt. Just a bit of fluff I guess? Enjoy (hopefully)!!
Zoro x Reader: Hands
You watch in amusement as a familiar head of green hair zig zags through the busy crowd, firmly set on heading closer and closer to the centre of the island – the completely opposite direction to the docks, where Nami told everyone to meet back at in less than half an hours time.
With a sigh you stand up, leaving a handful of coins on the cafe table along with your empty coffee mug before slipping into the crowd to hunt your errant crew mate down.
You pass through the press of bodies like a ghost, filling the empty spaces made by people as they pass by, barely brushing shoulders before you're moving on. It doesn't take long till your in arms reach – but you know better than to lay hands on the swordsman without announcing your presence first.
“Where do you think you're going?” You ask, falling into step beside him.
Zoro glances at you then turns his eyes back to his set path, “Back to the ship,” He says, as though it's obvious.
“You're going the wrong way,” You tell him, tugging his wrist to stop him moving any further.
A few shoppers grumble as they pass you and the blockage you and your crewmate have created in the street, but they continue on, moving around the two of you like an island in the flow of people.
“Am not.” He says, defensive as he shakes off your grip.
“Look, you can literally see the ocean down there!” You say, pointing over the many heads back down the way you've just come. The deep blue of the sea is clearly visible, sparkling in the late morning light.
Zoro blinks as if this is the first time he is noticing it, like it wasn't there a moment ago. “Huh,” Is all he says before rolling his shoulders and stepping back into the horde of people. You step into his wake, letting the people part for him while you trail behind.
“You really shouldn't be allowed out on your own,” You muse, and you know he can hear you because of how his shoulders tense, how the tips of his ears start to turn red. “We'll get you some reigns – you know, the things parents use to stop their kids from wandering off.”
“Shut up,” He grumbles, frowning back at you over his shoulder. You grin.
“I'm surprised you aren't on the other side of the island by now actually,” You admit. Those of you not in charge of stocking the Sunny had been left to your own devices on the island – Zoro could easily have been miles away by now. “It's a miracle I found you.”
“I'm not that bad,” He tells you, earning a snort of laughter from you.
You make the mistake of glancing away for a second too long, and by the time you look back Zoro is striding away through the crowd, heading for an alleyway on your right.
“Oi! Zoro!” You call, following after him through the many people.
He reaches the alley and ducks down it, but you're only a few steps behind so you see when he comes to a stop at the brick wall that closes the end of the alley only a few meters in.
“What are you doing?” You demand, hands planted firmly on your hips as he turns back towards you. He has the good sense to look embarrassed.
“I thought this might be a shortcut.” Zoro says, scratching his head.
“Well you thought wrong,” You smirk and watch as he turns back around, just to make sure it really is a dead end. “Come on Swordsman, we're going to be late.”
“We'll be fine,” He grumbles, irritation marring his face. “Lets go.”
“Here, give me your hand,” You say, holding yours out to him.
Zoro looks at the outstretched limb in the space between the two of you with confusion, his eyes flicking up to yours then back to your hand. You wiggle your fingers. “Take my hand.”
After a few more moments of hesitation you roll your eyes and lean forward, fitting you hand into his larger one, interlocking your fingers together.
“There! Now you're not getting away from me!” You say, grinning a him, but the smile slips off your face as he looks away. “You okay? Don't worry, I won't tell Sanji.”
“Whatever, lets just go.” Zoro says, his hand twitching around yours.
You nod, not wanting to press the issue, pulling him out into the crowded street again, expertly weaving your way between the other pedestrians with Zoro trailing behind.
Several times you feel his hand tugging against yours, as if testing your grip, but every time you look back he is there, his eyes locked on your hand clasped in his.
“You feeling alright? You look a bit red...” You say as you get to the end of the main thoroughfare and onto a less crowded street, the small of salt on the air.
“I'm fine, lets just get back to the ship,” Zoro says, still not looking at you.
“We've got some time, there's no huge rush,” You say, glancing at the sky. “Besides, this is nice!”
“Nice?” Zoro asks, his eyes flicking to your face, to your hands then away again.
“Yeah, it's been ages since I've held hands with anyone,” You shrug, then smirk. “Man that sounded a lot less lame in my head.”
“Your hands are soft,” Zoro blurts out, then closes his eyes and grimaces. “I mean – they're small but – uh, smooth.”
Zoro growls to himself, his cheeks red as he tries to pull his hand away from yours, embarrassed – but you keep a firm grip on him, your grin growing alongside his awkwardness.
“Been a while since you held anyone's hand too, huh?” You snort, glancing up to see the Sunny lined up with the other ships on the dock, Chopper and Nami going over whatever supplies they've purchased.
Zoro remains silent, his hand warm against yours as the blush creeps across his face.
“We should do it more often then, hm?” You suggest, coming to a stop a little way from the ship. Zoro glances at you, his lips pressed firmly together as if he's afraid he'll say something else to embarrass himself if he opens it. “I'll take that as a yes.”
Zoro gives the tiniest of nods as you release his hand.
“Well thanks for walking me back to the ship Zoro!” You say brightly, giving him a wink before turning on your heel to greet the others.
You don't hear the quiet exhale of breath as the swordsman finally allows himself to relax and you don't see the small smile that touches his lips as he glances down at his hand, the warmth of where your hand pressed against his still radiating through him.
