I love how the gloomy and rainy weather in the beginning of the jackson chapter in pt 1 is so representative of where joel is at in his journey. even though he has made strides in connecting with ellie, and she has poured new life into him (rain on the earth), his past hangs over him like a cloud he can’t shake, to an oppressive degree. so much so, he’s convinced he needs to get away from her as soon as possible. he subconsciously knows that he already cares a hell of a lot about her, making the fear of loving and losing her stay lodged in his throat, making it harder to talk, eat, and breath. he’s hard on her at the grave. he’s hard on tommy.
then the second he “let’s ellie go,” and she runs away, he follows after her and is obviously feeling a parental love and concern for a child, a feeling he hadn’t felt the last twenty years, as the sun breaks through the clouds and the rain. the fog lifts. and he has to come face to face with this opportunity to let the light in past his barriers as it shines through that house, through her and her vulnerability in that room. no matter how far he runs or how hard he pushes, the light still shines anyway… if only he could let himself feel it. and no matter what real feelings he may have for her, that fear is still stuck in his throat, and that’s all ellie gets…
