Sawyer family backstory headcanons!
Draytons parents were in their late teens (18 and 19) when they had him and his mother married into the family since the wife usually always takes the husbands last name
The reason why there is such a large age gap between Drayton and his 3 brothers is because his parents wanted to wait till they were in their thirties to try having more kids but they faced fertility problems, making their other boys be born in their fourties
(Just because the brothers fight with each other doesnât mean that they had a bad home life thatâs just a thing that siblings do which as one I can definitely confirm lol)
They all lived in Grandpa and Grandma Sawyers house but since the father and grandfather would be at the slaughterhouse it left the women to watch over them
Drayton started working at the gas station when he was 16 and although his father was a bit disappointed that he wasnât going to work at the slaughterhouse he was still supportive of him nonetheless
Mama Sawyer was a free spirit and always encouraged her kids to do whatever made them happy regardless of how strange their activities were *ahem* Nubbins, and taught Drayton how to cook which is why itâs his favorite activity to do
Papa Sawyer was a bit more realistic and calmer than his wife but still loved his boys anyway and taught them how to skin animals and how to hunt. He also worried about finances and the boys going off and being wild children.
Grandma Sawyer taught her grandsons how to sew and how to fix things around the house such as furniture and lamps
Grandpa Sawyer was always playing with them and listening to whatever they wanted to talk about and his grandsons mainly came to him if they were upset over something
Nubbins, Bubba, and Chop Top all canonically worked at the slaughterhouse likely starting at the age of 18 and into their early to mid twenties until their grandfather quit in protest and they followed suite
Worried about finances their father decided to travel elsewhere looking for work and his wife joined him since she didnât want him to be alone and because her boys were already grown, before leaving she told her boys to look after one another and then they left
However as they were away they were murdered by a serial killer and their bodies were never found the family just assumed that maybe they just havenât found work yet but deep down Drayton thinks they just got sick of having to waste their money on them and left
Shortly afterwards a robber would break into their home at night and kill the grandmother and in a fit of rage they all attacked the robber and in their madness and grief would decide to cook and eat the robber
This explains why they eat people and why they hate outsiders so much
After this grandpa sawyer would fall into his current state after having lost the love of his life and would remain that way for most of the time
Drayton would all of a sudden be forced to take on the responsibility of caring for his reckless brothers which is when he would have angry outbursts and use the broom
Nubbins doesnât really care about bothering him (we see in the first movie heâs not scared when Drayton hits or threatens him and instead openly mocks him) and chooses to do whatever he wants even if his brother doesnât approve such as leaving Bubba alone even thought Draytons scared someone will hurt him like they did with his grandma
Bubba is more frightened when Drayton gets like that since growing up his brother was always kind and would take care of them all, so seeing that side of him is something else entirely
Chop is kinda like Nubbins but not as extreme and is more comfortable being around him (in tcm2 he latches onto Draytons sleeve when Enright arrives and is always joking and singing to his brother) and when he was younger he would ride in the pickup truck along with Drayton or his mama and they would sing along to the radio
Chop has a strong sense of patriotism (as suggested in the trailers for the All American Massacre movie that was never released) and wanted to join the army to fight for his country like his daddy always taught him to do
Drayton although concerned for his younger brother encouraged him to serve since he would learn more about the world (and because it would be one less mouth to feed đ)

This is my first ever writing ask so I hope it turns out alright!
Chop Top
Helps Bubba with the makeup on his mask and suggests trying different looks and styles
Would LOVE to dress his siblings up to make them match him but if they didnât agree *ahem* Drayton *ahem* then he would try to dress them in anything that matches their aesthetic. Example of what he would like to think Drayton would wear (businesslike but classy think Iâll draw him in his later)
If the radio is all static or the batteries die out then he would gladly love to sing all requested tunes at the top of his lungs, filling up the entire house with song!
Now for outside of grandpas influence he likely developed a love for singing from his mom (Iâve seen this headcanon around and itâs really sweet) and he likely would also sing to his comrades when he was in Nam as well whenever they got bored and there was nothing to do
When he was little he stole his family members clothes and tried them on for himself mismatching everything and sometimes making them a bit more âinterestingâ (painting on them or sewing random bits to them)
Is practically attached at the hip to his twin Nubbins and likely always goes with him wherever he goes but when he canât come along heâll get all jittery and pick at himself (such as his head, nails, or scabs)
Gives really strong hugs and loves touching people to show affection since his mom and grandma did the same with him
Wrestled a lot with Nubbins when they were kids and still does it now if Nubs touches his stuff or flicks his plate with his fingers
Drayton taught him how to drive but he would drive recklessly and would practically give Drayton a heart attack and even now refuses to drive with him (bro literally drove backwards on the highway in tcm2 who wouldnât be scared smh)
Nubbins
His mom taught him and his brothers how to sew and encouraged his strange habits of collecting roadkill and making accessories out of them since it made him happy and allowed him to focus all that extra energy on something productive
However he probably collects other little things he finds on the road such as coins, trinkets, or rocks that he finds interesting and will proudly show them off to the family but Drayton is only ever interested if itâs coins smh while Chop and Bubba are always ecstatic when he finds something
Chop probably tries taking his things and a fist fight would ensue causing whatever object they were fighting over to be taken away by Drayton and he retaliates by taking Drayton and Chops stuff leading to a broom beating
Bugs Drayton all the time and pokes at him during the worst times such as when heâs cleaning or cooking and makes fun of him whenever he gets the chance
Chews on animal or human bones when he gets bored
Has gotten almost hit or actually hit by cars multiple times since he would just jump out in front of them smh
Tries to get Bubba to be more outgoing and is always saying how thereâs more to life outside of the house
Has gotten sunburned multiple times (Chop will slap the burned parts and then they fight)
Drayton
Feels under appreciated most of the time by the twins and openly complains about it but they just make fun of him for it (mainly Nubbins) but Bubba is grateful for him which makes him feel just slightly better about it
Only responsible one in the family besides maybe Bubba and is in charge of the finances since he is the only one with an actual job causing him to be constantly worried about their finances which is a habit that he picked up from his dad
Since he was the only child for so long he was very spoiled and likely got used to getting whatever he wanted which is why he gets so upset when nobody listens to him or does their job right
Doesnât take pleasure in killing animals which is why he chose not to work at the slaughterhouse (he doesnât like killing and clearly states it in tcm 1974)
Taps his fingers when heâs bored and makes the tapping match along with a song heâs thinking about
Sings when heâs alone but if the twins catch him Chop will pester him to sing along with him and Nubbins will tease him about it to no end
When he was WAY younger he would play and wrestle with the twins and Bubba but he canât anymore since heâs much older than them and has joint pain and gets frustrated by it easily
Didnât and still doesnât have many friends going back to when he was young and prefers to be by himself or with his family members since their the only ones he truly knows and cares about
Just wants whatâs best for his family which is why he worries about them when heâs not around and why heâs so hard on them
Accidentally burned himself cooking a couple of times but refuses to admit it out of pride
Bubba
Helps Drayton with his bow ties since he has trouble and his fingers hurt sometimes
Helps Nubbins with his little projects such as stringing bones together or sewing pieces of victims together
Helps Chop sew parts of his clothes and will hum along when Chop is singing one of his usual songs
Whenever he accidentally cuts himself when working Drayton will mainly be the one to help patch him up since heâs older and more experienced
When people would mock him when he was little his twins brothers would beat them up even if it was only a minor insult
I like to think that someone else in his family (probably grandpa) also canât really form sentences and only grunts or hums which is why his family accepts him and doesnât admonish him for not being able to talk and why he has such a close relationship with grandpa
When he was born the twins were a bit jealous of him but over time came to accept and love their little brother after Drayton explained to them that their little brother would need them when he was older
His grandmother taught him about makeup when he got into his moms when she was away and although his mom was at first concerned she realized he was quite good with makeup and would often have him help her put it on her face when she was going out or just wanting to look pretty
Wears a mask since it helps him to feel less shy and even though his family thinks he looks fine as long as heâs happy then they wonât bother him about it
Tcm Oc: Darla Sawyer
Darla is the mother of Drayton, Choptop, Nubbins, and Bubba Sawyer, the daughter in law of Grandma and Grandpa Sawyer, and the wife of my other TCM Oc Jimmy Sawyer
She was a highly sheltered child growing up whose family wanted her to oppress everything they found âembarrassingâ about her and when she found out she was pregnant they immediately disowned her and only allowed her to take a handful of possessions with her
The reason she fell in love with Jimmy was because he made her feel like she could truly be herself with him and is beloved not only by him but by his parents as well
On their wedding day Grandma Sawyer let Darla wear her old wedding dress and gave her the pearls seen in her design to truly welcome her into the family
Since her father refused to acknowledge her Grandpa Sawyer would be the one to walk her down the aisle and into the arms of his son
She adores her sons and often encourages them to do whatever makes them happy even if it might be pretty strange to others *ahem* Nubbins
She always told Drayton he was the one that made her want to become a better person than her parents were and encouraged him to go his own path such as being a gas station owner instead of going into the slaughterhouse like her husband and father in law did
She and her husband started trying to have more children when they were in their thirties but due to fertility problems it took until they were in their mid forties to finally get pregnant with the twins and then Bubba
She taught he boys how to sew and allowed Bubba to help her with her makeup after realizing how good he was with it
When Grandpa Sawyer and later her youngest three quit the slaughterhouse, her husband decided to go and find work elsewhere and chose to go with him since he was always there for her and because her boys were all grown
Right before she left she told her boys to look after themselves and their grandparents and that she loved them with all her heart
However she and her husband would never return as she was later killed alongside her husband by a serial killer leading her boys and in laws to never know what happened to either of them

If bubba uses different pronouns around their mother. Did she tell him the name so they could use it?
I think Darla would be a little bit apprehensive about having a daughter because she was treated differently most of her life because her parents thought she wasnât âprettyâ or âfeminineâ enough to really qualify as a woman and wouldnât want her potential daughter to be treated that way by people either. However she did always want to have someone be named after herself so in order to kinda achieve this she used the first three letters of her name to name her first baby, Drayton, and with Bubba Darla used her last letter so that both their names could end with the letter A. (If twins were girls Nubbins would be named Nellie and Chop (Robert) would be Roxanne or Rachael)
I think for the second question it really depends on how Bubba presents themselves like if itâs his usual workmen getup than he would go by he/him, when wearing the lady mask Bubba would go by they/them, and for a full feminine getup it would be she/her. For when Bubba feels more like being feminine the name she would go by would either be Barbie or Dolly (since Dolly almost sounds like Darla and Barbie because to Darla they remind her of a doll)
Do you think Bubbaâs pet chicken has a name? Personally I think Bubba, being, well, himself, would probably name her something completely nonsensical, but thatâs just me
Tbh I think Bubba would name them something â¨extravagant⨠like Wilma Eggington or Shelly Von Yolk if they were feeling a bit silly

Itâs alright, my OC is named Darla Sawyer, and I think that itâs perfectly fine that you got inspired by my own ocâs backstory (thatâs never happened before so thatâs honestly pretty cool) but Iâll just explain more about her backstory just so you know thereâs nothing to fret over!
TCM OC backstory: Darla Sawyer (with a bit of Jimmy Sawyer)
Her parents always wanted a first born son, but instead Darla was the first with her brother following second
Her parents constantly made her feel that she wasnât âprettyâ or âfeminineâ enough since she had tons of freckles all over her skin, was a bit heavier than most girls, and was more adventurous than a girl was âsupposed to beâ
They always told her brother that he could take after her since she was basically a boy herself which only made her feel she had to hide more of herself in order to ever be accepted by them. However they would never accept her no matter how hard she tried whether it be putting on makeup, trying to lose weight, or being more of a homebody like how most girls at the time were taught to be
When she was fourteen she would meet her future husband: Jimmy Sawyer and he was the first and only person in her life to think that she was truly beautiful and was always excited to be around her since he genuinely took enjoyment in being by her side
As a result of this whenever she was with him she was allowed to truly be herself around him without being judged, however friends of her parents would see her and him acting like âhooligansâ and go straight to her parents which they would respond by physically hurting her and telling her that she was embarrassing them by hanging out with this boy but she secretly defied them and continued seeing Jimmy
However the turning point came when she was 18 years old and found out that she was pregnant with Drayton to which her parents immediately disowned her, kicking her out of the house, and only allowing her to take the few possessions she owned
She would run to a now 19 year old Jimmy, crying and telling him what happened all while begging him not to leave her. He would respond by asking her to marry him and telling her that he always knew he wanted to spend his life with her and would gladly take care of her and the baby
Grandma Sawyer would give Darla her old wedding dress and gifted her a pearl necklace and bracelets as a âwelcome to the family giftâ and Grandpa Sawyer would walk her down the aisle since her own parents refused to acknowledge her or their future grandchild
Fast forward more than 20 years later and Darla has the twins and Bubba after trying for so long to have more children (Drayton is 25 when the twins are born and 27 when Bubba is born)
When the boys are all grown up they quit the slaughterhouse in support after their grandfather quitting and Jimmy decides to travel to find work to which Darla decided to join him seeing as how her boys were all grown now and that he was always their when she needed him and now it was her turn to be there for him
However not long into their trip they would both become the victims of a serial killer and their bodies would never be found (this explains why their bodies arenât in the attic with grandma sawyer)

TCM OC: Jimmy Sawyer (Sawyer bros dad)
Super energetic kid (like nubbins and Choptop) and couldnât wait until he was old enough to work in the slaughterhouse just like his dad
Got his birth mark from his mama (even though hers is way smaller) and she would always call him her âstrawberry boyâ because of that
He met his wife Darla when he was 15 and she was 14 under a tree where she was crying over what her mom had said to her and after a while of talking he fell head over heels for her
He was going to marry her anyway when she turned 18 so when they found out she was pregnant with Drayton it didnât damper his need to marry her
When the depression hit (Drayton was already born in 1920 so he wouldâve been a young kid) he started to become a workaholic in order to keep the family afloat and since then had a deep fear of running out of money and continued to work even into his 60s (this is where Drayton gets his money worries from)
He secretly regrets not being there as much for his family because of his work and tries his best to make it up to them whenever heâs around (even though they donât blame him for it he still has this need to help them and make things right)
Taught all his boys how to hunt but taught the younger three taxidermy since Drayton was uncomfortable with it and he didnât want to push him to do something he didnât want to do
While he was a bit disappointed that Drayton wouldnât work in the slaughterhouse he was still very proud that he was able to open up a business of his own
Would always slow dance with his wife and the kids (particularly Bubba) would secretly stand nearby and watch them
When he and his family quit the slaughterhouse out of protest he decided to travel to go find work with Darla choosing to come along, but they would make it because they became the victims of a serial killer
He would try to protect his wife by fending off the attacker and telling her to run but he was outmatched and the killer took after his wife, both of them were never found and in the after life he feels guilty that he couldnât protect her but she doesnât blame him so because he canât move on and she refuses to leave his side they are currently stuck in purgatory
When there kids and grandpa die and have to be sent to hell they BOTH (along with grandma sawyer) decide to go with them since family always sticks together no matter what
(That was kinda sad at the end there so hereâs my first ever concept doodle of the Sawyer parents and baby Drayton đ)
