Class field trip at Profound Microfarms today. I learned so much from Jeff and the farm techs. When the pandemic started, they adapted by offering home delivery. The quality of these greens were outstanding. The industrial supply chain for grocery stores takes 3ish weeks to reach the dinner plate of Americans. By then, the shelf life is maybe a week or two before those greens start looking wilty. These are picked at peak ripeness, and are delivered a day before delivery! This shortens the distance driven to our homes, by effectively cutting out a good chunk of the middle men involved.
Random thoughts and questions:
I look forward to learning more. Maybe I can apply this knowledge in my next job or home?
Does anyone know someone who has experience with 3D-printing homes, or shipping container gardens?
https://getchipdrop.com offers free woodchuck mulch
https://grodan.com was the seeding substrate they used to germinate under red and blue lights.
Greenhouses may not be 100% sustainable rn. The monthly costs for the Profound Microfarms is:
- $1,000 to $2,000/mo for electricity. Though maybe cheaper to run the greenhouses 24 hours than in 12 hour increments, since turning the automatic systems on and off is a sizable tax on power.
- $100 to $200/mo for water (Collin county also taxes additional homes that reclaim rainwater)
- $600 to $1,000/mo for propane for the greenhouses themselves.
Metrics collected within the greenhouse:
- water temperature
- dissolved oxygen
- air temperature (72ยฐF - 73ยฐF is what PMF aims for)
- Jeff also noted that lower, more squat ceiling greenhouses are more difficult to control temperature and humidity-wise.
Common insects in the geeenhouse:
- aphids. Aphids, APHIDS -- Jeff noted that they use a combination of ladybugs, predatory wasps, and praying mantis to help regulate when aphids are apparent in the closed greenhouse system.
Greenhouses in Texas need to be oriented North to South, and away from all over-reaching shadows and tree cover. Fans and an insulating wall need to be built on the Northside.
Since you got this far, NFT is an acronym for a style of hydroponic farming that stands for nutrient film technique.
Collin County Master Gardening (https://ccmgatx.org) offers classes to become a master gardener that I may be looking into for the future!
Stay curious!
CINEMALAYA 2016 Ang Bagong Pamilya ni Ponching
The film itself is definitely a breather and this is actually my very first Cinemalaya experience that I am a part of. Tโwas overwhelming to be there actually. Also I got partly shy hearing my voice in the cinema but people were cool with it and found it great so thatโs a good start, I guess.
Team Ponching felt super warm, the audiences were happy from start โtil the end, even though some really found the film a little too simple. Well, to me that was the main point of it all. Not being able to feel the weight of the world for an hour and I guess thatโs ok.
Anyway this is another check for my impossible goals list, Iโve always wanted to write a song for a film although this one has a little pinch of it because it wasnโt mine. I got the opportunity to sing one of the Cunejoโs originalย song which is entitled โLumang Palabasโย that we might create a studio version soon enough. (Itโs the song for the reminiscing moments of Lola with her old lover scene)
I really hope you get to catch the film before the local indie film fest ends and let me know watchu think.
Thank ya!!!
If you want to buy some of my prints... please let me know. I am trying to raise funds to be able to go to an art fair on Febuary the 16th.
Thank you.
Dont like your loved ones so much but need to send them a card for the holidays? Try this out.

Keeping the Literary Love Alive: Support The Penny University Bookstore Today! Shaina Tranquilino April 4, 2024
Dear Supporters,
In the enchanting world of literature, where stories transport us to new realms and characters become cherished companions, there exists a havenโa sanctuary for bibliophiles known as The Penny University Bookstore. This beloved independent bookstore has been a beacon of literary delight, a community cornerstone where bookworms of all ages congregate to explore, discover, and indulge in the magic of reading.
However, behind the shelves laden with stories and the cozy nooks inviting readers to lose themselves in the pages of a book lies a tale of struggleโone that we, as a vibrant bookish community, cannot overlook. The Penny University, like many small businesses, has faced its share of challenges, and the recent economic downturn has cast a shadow upon its future.
They are reaching out to you, their cherished supporters, in a time of need. The past winter has been particularly harsh, with financial pressures mounting and resources dwindling. Despite their resilience and determination, they find themselves at a crossroads, where the future of their beloved bookstore hangs in the balance.
They have weathered storms before, buoyed by the unwavering support of the local community. Your patronage, your enthusiasm, and your love for literature have sustained them through thick and thin. Now, they humbly ask for your help once more.
At the forefront of the current challenges is the urgent need to afford the annual subscription to their 'Bookmanager' softwareโan indispensable tool that empowers them to efficiently curate their collection and cater to the diverse tastes of their readers. Additionally, the burden of accumulating bills weighs heavily upon them, stretching their already limited resources to the brink.
But amidst these trials, there shines a glimmer of hopeโa beacon of solidarity and generosity that illuminates the path forward. By contributing to their GoFundMe campaign, you're not just assisting them in meeting their financial obligations; you're investing in the very essence of our bookish community. You're preserving a cultural treasure, a haven where imaginations soar, and where the transformative power of literature knows no bounds.
Every donation, no matter how modest, carries the potential to make a profound impact. Together, we can overcome this challenge, fortifying the foundation upon which our bookstore stands and ensuring that it remains a cherished fixture in our community's tapestry for generations to come.
As they navigate these uncertain waters, they extend their deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has lent them your support, your encouragement, and your belief in the enduring power of storytelling. Together, let us keep the literary love alive and illuminate the path ahead with the radiance of our shared passion for books.
Thank you, from the bottom of our book-filled hearts, for standing with them in their time of need. Here is the GoFundMe Link for The Penny University: https://gofund.me/3dddbc2d
Continuing My New Yearโs Resolution: Donating to Help The Cathedral Community Fridge for October 2024 Shaina Tranquilino October 1, 2024
As the year goes on, Iโve been grateful to stay true to my New Yearโs resolution of donating to a different cause each month. This October, Iโm excited to support an initiative that deeply resonates with me: Help The Cathedral Community Fridge in Regina, Saskatchewan. This organization is tackling food insecurity in a unique and powerful wayโentirely community-funded, run by volunteers, and driven by the spirit of mutual aid.
Why I Chose Help The Cathedral Community Fridge
Food insecurity is a growing issue across Canada, and Regina is no exception. The Cathedral Community Fridge provides an immediate and essential solutionโfood, directly to those in need, every day. What makes this organization even more special is its pure reliance on community support. They donโt receive any government or charity funding. Thereโs no large-scale nonprofit organization backing them. Instead, they thrive solely on the contributions of neighbors, friends, and generous strangers who understand that community support is the backbone of food security.
This resonated with me because itโs a reminder that we donโt always need massive institutions or bureaucracies to create change. Sometimes, itโs the collective effort of individuals working together that makes the biggest difference. Knowing my donation will help them continue their mission made this monthโs choice easy.
What the Donations Support
Help The Cathedral Community Fridge goes beyond just providing food. Theyโre offering an entire support system for the vulnerable and marginalized in Regina. Hereโs a glimpse into the incredible impact theyโre making with the funds they receive:
Feeding 100s of people daily: The Fridge ensures that people who might not have regular access to meals can grab something fresh and nutritious, no questions asked.
Delivering 700 food hampers annually: Theyโre not just relying on people to come to themโvolunteers actively deliver food hampers to those most in need, especially the elderly, people who have disabilities, or those without transportation.
Driving 5,000 kilometers a year: Gas funding allows volunteers to cover a vast area, making sure food reaches remote or overlooked individuals who are often left out of food security networks.
Delivering 200,000 lbs of food annually: Itโs hard to comprehend just how much food passes through the hands of these volunteers. Every pound represents a crucial meal for someone who might otherwise go hungry.
Providing shelter and resources: Beyond food, The Cathedral Community Fridge supports the houseless population by purchasing supplies such as sleeping bags, tents, and water, while offering basic essentials like medical supplies and gloves.
Funding Crisis Team supplies: Reginaโs harsh winters mean that immediate crisis response can sometimes be the difference between life and death. Donations go toward bus passes, emergency supplies, and other resources to help people get out of dangerous situations.
Supporting other Mutual Aid Networks: Itโs beautiful to see that they donโt just stop at helping their own community. They share resources with other mutual aid networks, creating a ripple effect that amplifies the power of every donation.
Why This Work Matters
Food insecurity isnโt just about lack of access to meals. Itโs connected to housing instability, mental health, and a cycle of poverty that can feel impossible to break. What Help The Cathedral Community Fridge is doing matters because theyโre not just providing foodโtheyโre giving people the means to survive and, in many cases, thrive.
The fact that this initiative is entirely volunteer-driven is incredibly inspiring. No one is getting paid, but everyoneโs work is deeply valued. It feels great to support a cause where every dollar donated goes straight to helping the community, rather than administrative costs or overhead.
How You Can Get Involved
If this cause resonates with you as much as it did with me, I encourage you to support Help The Cathedral Community Fridge. Whether itโs a financial donation, volunteering your time, or simply spreading the word, every little bit helps.
You can follow them on social media, share their posts, and, if you're in Regina, consider dropping off food or supplies at the fridge. The more we spread awareness, the more we can help strengthen the sense of community that is already thriving there.
As I continue this journey of giving each month, Iโve realized just how much of a difference small, consistent acts of kindness can make. Help The Cathedral Community Fridge is just one example of a local initiative making a huge impact, and Iโm grateful to play even a small role in supporting their work this October.
If you're inspired, I hope youโll consider joining me in supporting causes that speak to your heart and uplift your community. Together, we can create real, lasting changeโone month, one donation, one act of kindness at a time.
Letโs keep the giving spirit alive this fall, and remember that community is the foundation of progress! https://gofund.me/439bf431
