hello adam savage calling the mythbusters "ambiguously gay weirdos"
One of the most life-changing things I ever learned came from Mythbusters, where they tested and proved (with cognitive testing puzzles and reaction time tests) that lying down and resting with the intention to sleep STILL provided significant mental benefits over just staying awake, even if a person couldn’t fall asleep in the amount of time they had.
It helps me to actually sleep to know that just lying down with my eyes closed is still doing me some good, and helps me to not freak out/beat myself up when I stay up later than intended. Any amount of rest is better than no rest!
So if you didn’t know that…now you do
mythbusters was so good because it wasn't a killjoy show. they didn't just say "see, it doesn't work" and leave it there
whenever they find that the stunt doesn't work as portrayed in the movie, they immediately ask "what would it take to make this happen?"

I can't
Jamie with Kari’s Boston terrier puppy Gertrude in his beret
I think Jamie jackhammered concrete sidewalk while half naked was... something.. *smirk*
3.2 but the dynamite said we can
Mythbusters have 3 categories of myths
the general public doesnt know how physics works
the general public doesnt know how lying works
oh crap this ones real
Some art on Adam! I like the one in the red sweater the best! And small Jamie in the first art!
Bonus:
"It makes sense to become a drill."
This phrase showed up in not one, but two dreams last night. No clue why. One dream at least featured the spoon drill from Mythbusters (when they were trying to hollow a tree trunk into a can using period tools). The other involved building a spaceship. So, yeah. :)
You know, that Mythbusters post legitimately changed my life. Before seeing it, I had exponentially more guilt and stress about not being able to sleep, which of course, further exacerbated my inability to sleep.
Now, every time I wake up about three am, knowing I have to get up at 6.45, instead of stressing and panicking about how my day is going to be sleep deprived and miserable, I just tell myself 'Time to activate Mythbusters Protocol' and lie there with my eyes closed safe in the knowledge that I am measurably reducing later feelings of exhaustion.
And when this happens, about 70% of the time the reduction of guilt and stress means I actually do fall back asleep, so all in all instead of getting only three or four hours sleep, I get five to six and a half.
Which y'know, major improvement in health and energy.
Was watching Mythbusters do the "beat the breathalizer" tests and like... even if they found a way to do it they could never air it because it would embolden drunk drivers and indirectly cost thousands of lives. Now I'm just wondering if there was ever a myth they did where the result became unairable because if they broadcast that knowledge to the general public it would be ridiculously dangerous like that time the Smiling Friends found out the Earth was flat or some shit.
"Adam we can't tell anybody we didn't Bust this Myth, people cannot know this is real, we have to take this to our graves Adam."
when I was a kid I thought buster from mythbusters was a real person they just kept doing experiments on and putting back together over and over again and it was very distressing
Out of all the cool stuff that mythbusters ever shot on high speed camera, shooting a soccer ball at 60mph out of a truck traveling 60mph is one of my favorites
Just look at it. It is the most perfect visual representation of Newton’s 2nd law of physics I’ve ever seen. The ball, which was shot out of a CANNON, drops straight down. Two equal and opposite velocities completely canceling each other out, leaving the soccer ball to drop to the earth with a net velocity of 0. Sir issac newton would be proud to tears of this gif.
And yet this “myth” is nothing more than basic physics at work. A 10 year old with an interest in science could have told us this is possible. 60mph in one direction minus 60mph the exact opposite direction is 0. Basic.
But what makes this so frieken cool is the fact that they went through all the trouble to actually demonstrate the invisible laws that govern the way our universe works. To get this shot both the soccer ball and the truck had to be moving at the exact same speed. Real world variables make that extremely difficult to pull off. It took them hundreds of attempts to get it right. They went through all that trouble to “prove” something we have known as fact for hundreds of years. And we get this amazing gif to watch as a result.
Mythbusters is incredible. Science is incredible. And the fact that this experiment in physics can be used in science classes for years and years to come to help children learn about physics is incredible.
