These are some sketches Sadamoto did on some scripts.
So first off Dungeon Meshi and Evangelion spoilers below:
So I don't know if this has already been confirmed or not, but I feel like these two scenes are specifically evangelion references
So first we have the already talked about Ramiel/Undine scene;
Where the undine not only shifts it's form slightly when it fires its laser but also makes a kinda screaming noise when it fires
But another scene I haven't seen people discuss is the shapeshifter fight and it's parallels to EVA Unit 01 going berserk
(EVA 01 L: Sachiel Fight, EVA 01 R: Zuriel Fight)
Their eyes open the same, they seem to have a similar shape(vaguely) and they make a super similar sound effect (and the first frame of both awakening is them with one eye)
Just thought the idea was cool (and am back deep into my EVA hyper-fixation so everything just seems like EVA to me rn)
I fucking love the idea of Shinji becoming an angel of nephlim in some form, so fucking much.
Like it pushes him closer to being like Kaworu, it kinda shows a loss of humanity, and kinda the effects of his repeated sacrifice when he pilots; and especially after the Zereul fight, seeing Shinji's body now reflecting the evolution and loss of humanity that Unit 01 has following its merge with the S² engine.
Also it just looks and feels dope as hell! The idea of Shinji being left not entirely human after Unit 01 reconstituted him, and him becoming the very thing he's been fighting against. Shinji after giving everything he had left, breaking his promise to never pilot again, choosing to get back in and fight again showing the last of his humanity dying with him as Zereul stabs him, and letting him be reborn as some form of angel-human (a nephlim?), and also the idea of shinji having like the core red eyes, and controlling unit 01 (like Kaworu controlling 02), also just looks so cool to me. And I feel like it kinda shows a better version of "The Curse of the EVA" that they mention
Like I loved that in Rebuild 2.0 and 3.0+1.0
