Hey thank you so much! I'm absolutely gonna try to take all this tips in account! Btw I'm (kinda)honoured you took so much time answering my question.
×veri
Hey, First of all I wanna say how much I love your art but actually I wanted to ask you for some advice. I'm making some kind of storyboard and I'd like to know how you colour them best, using different shades of grey...? Since you do this so much I thought you could maybe give some tips(?) ×veri
Thanks Veri! I kinda goofed because I initially misread your question and though you wanted to know how I do the tones for the dailies I’ve posted. I misread stuff all-the-time. Might be my adhd...
Anyhoo for boards there is no set way to add tones & flats. I think it only matters if your boards read well.
For feature animation the styles vary wildly and the artists are usually allowed to draw in their own styles because unlike tv there are a lot more steps to the final shot.
Huge difference between sequences right?
For tv it’s more important to draw “on model” because the sequences get sent straight to overseas animation. But even there the way they add tones and flats varies:
I personally like it when the artist uses different flat colors for different characters so you can tell them apart easier during hectic action sequences.
Now just in case you do want to know how I do those b&w daily sketches with lighting its basically the method I described in my last youtoobs (please ignore bizarre intro)
It basically the same technique but with different shades of grey for the flat colors and without any color correction shenanigans.
But do not use this technique for storyboards! It’s way too slow and unnecessary. If your story has moments in it where certain lighting is important to convey just add a multiply layer over your boards and add it that way but you don’t need any “local color”. And really that’s only for stuff like your character is hiding in the dark an suddenly a flashlight hits them. But scenes like that are rare and most times you can leave out lighting entirely.
I hope this helps, just let me know if you have any more questions!

❔😕Daily question/mystery: do you know an animal or creature(so no plants) doing photosynthesis? I'm actually really proud of this one, for once not an old drawing but one I made yesterday. One important fact I didn't make her GREEN💚 because that's the typical alien colour but because I believe there must be a possibility for creatures to live on PHOTOSYNTHESIS.🌞🌱 #space #aliengirl #galactic #green #hairstyle #artistsoninstagram #art #artwork #fantasy #watercolor #waterpainting https://www.instagram.com/p/B0sarVAim4P/?igshid=185s3d4l2vgvm
